Rage for Indonesian political prisoners
PERTH — Spank and Humbug are just two of the major bands which will be donating their time and talents for a Freedom Rage to be held at the Ozone Bar on November 7.
The band night aims to raise consciousness and money for a campaign initiated by Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor in support of political prisoners being held by the Suharto regime.
According to Justin Randel, one of the event's organisers, "A range of pro-democracy activists, particularly members of the banned People's Democratic Party, were targeted for arrest and imprisonment after July.
"Many people will remember meeting Dita Sari when she came to Perth offering support to our struggles and asking for solidarity for hers. She is just one of those now in Suharto's jails."
The Freedom Rage is being organised by Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly, with proceeds going to the political prisoners' campaign and the Â鶹´«Ã½ fighting fund.
Randel said that by building the band night activists hoped to encourage more people to get involved in the campaign, which includes a public meeting with Edwin Gozal, an Indonesian activist, at UWA on November 14 and the Dili massacre commemoration rally on November 16.
People are being urged to support ASIET's petition campaign to free the prisoners. For information call Justin or Trish on 9227 7367.
