Australians for Genocide Party?

By Sarah Harris

WOLLONGONG — The candidate of the Australians Against Further Immigration Party for the seat of Throsby, David Hughes, has made a novel contribution to the immigration debate.

Hughes replied to a survey of candidates distributed by the radical youth organisation Resistance. In his response, Hughes called for the reopening of a local abattoir "to process Australia's 100 000 illegal immigrants. Our soils are thin and poor and need blood and bone: 500+ jobs."

Hughes, alias Mr Zero Population Growth, was until recently a member of the Liberal Party. He believes Aboriginal land rights "have gone far enough", that abortions should be "compulsory for all women after two children" and that curfews would not be necessary for young people if they "get jobs that make them tired and want to sleep at night". He described himself as a "right-wing greenie".

The party Hughes represents, however, is not without its supporters. The editorial of the September '92 edition of the newsletter of Australians for Environmentally Sustainable Population states that the Australians Against Further Immigration Party and the Democrats "are far ahead of other parties on social and environmental issues".

The policies of the AAFI are clearly not far ahead in any sense, and AESP would do well to examine the policies of this party far more closely before making such claims.
