APPM announces job cuts

By Dave Wright

LAUNCESTON — Associated Pulp and Paper Mills has announced that it wants to shed 300 jobs from its Burnie and Wesley Vale mills by Christmas.

A spokesperson for APPM said it was hopeful of meeting this target, and an 18-month target of 400 redundancies.

The company wants to scale back operations to about 70% capacity. It blames a decline in national and international orders.

Enterprise agreement negotiations between APPM and unions have come to a standstill. The company is still seeking to increase the working week from 35 to 38 hours.
