Marx鈥檚 lessons for today鈥檚 climate rebels

Imagine you came across a 150-year-old message in a bottle that predicted the world would face a catastrophic crisis as a result of profit-driven capitalism.

Imagine that prediction also explained why capitalism 鈥 sustained for generations through the exploitation of nature and human labour 鈥 would push aside all moral, rational and scientific objections in the blind pursuit of profit.

New 7-Eleven pay scandal

Employees of a Brisbane 7-Eleven store have told the ABC they were forced to pay back thousands of dollars from their wages or face losing their jobs.

They have backed up their claims with covert video showing an employee handing back a sizeable portion of her pay to the store franchisee.

Known in the industry as the 鈥渃ash back鈥 scam, workers are paid the full award rate of $25 an hour, but have to hand back up to $11 for every hour worked to the store franchisee.

South Africa: Mine workers take over company to defend jobs

NUMSA supports the decision taken by Mine Line workers to take-over and run the company since it was long placed under curatorship. The Mine Line company is based in Doornkop, and produces valves for mining machines. Out of fear of paying workers decent wages, its owner Waynerd Mulder declared the company bankrupt in August after reaping the profits generated through the sweat and blood of workers. As a result of this melodrama by Mulder, workers were hardest hit by the company鈥檚 non-operation and lost their earnings in the midst of the escalating cost of living in our country.

Britain: Strike knocks out tube lines

British rail unions branded Transport for London (TfL) 鈥渂arefaced liars" after its management attempted to claim minimum disruption during a 24-hour strike on November 3. London Underground services were crippled by strike action called by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) over safety-critical job cuts. All 11 of the London鈥檚 Tube lines were hit by the walkout. The action was the latest in a series of strikes over plans to axe up to 2000 jobs, including 800 station staff.

Britain: Millionaires鈥 government declares class war

The Conservative Party, or Tories, has never really forgiven the British working class for demanding and winning the creation of the 鈥渨elfare state鈥. Gains won included such things as free health care, council homes at affordable rents, and care for the elderly and vulnerable. From the Tories鈥 point of view, these are all things individuals should sort out for themselves. The modern state should provide the same level of social protection as was available to Queen Victoria鈥檚 subjects in the 19th century.

Mining magnate Andrew 鈥淭wiggy鈥 Forrest had an opportunity on ABC鈥檚 November 1 screening of Q&A to defend his record on Aboriginal employment. He didn鈥檛 do very well. 鈥淵ou can see that through Generation One, a real challenge to fill those jobs, because we've proven for all time that corporate Australia 鈥 in fact every Australian 鈥 isn't racist鈥, Forrest said. 鈥淲e do love our first Australians. We do want to help them as much as we can but we can do it without just throwing money, and I believe I could do more.鈥

Gillard pushes big business barrow

Prime Minister Julia Gillard knew just who she was talking to when she gave her address to the Australian Industry Group鈥檚 annual dinner on October 25. The AIG and its affiliates represent more than 60,000 bosses, according to its website. This includes Veolia, the privatisation juggernaut. But just so she didn鈥檛 rustle too many feathers, Gillard spoke to them in the kind of arcane riddles she hoped only they could understand.

Unionists support zero carbon transition plan

The following statement was adopted by the Trade Union Climate Change Conference held in Melbourne on October 9. * * * This conference of Victorian union activists and local climate activists commends the report by Beyond Zero Emissions and Melbourne University鈥檚 Energy Research Centre. The report outlines a technically feasible and economically viable way for Australia to transition to 100% renewable energy within 10 years.

Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM) secretary-general S. Arutchelvan called the proposed labour law review by the human resources Ministry was 鈥渄raconian鈥, klick4Malaysia.com said on October 1.

Britain: Worker-run plant takes renewables lead

One year after workers occupied the Vestas wind turbine factory on the Isle of Wight in protest at the company鈥檚 decision to cease production, a new organisation, Sureblades set up by former Vestas employees has risen from the ashes. It is due to start making blades within two months just yards from the closed factory.

China: Prison-like factory produces US goods

On June 29, the US-based National Labor Committee released a report documenting the illegal and harsh sweatshop conditions at the Jabil Circuit factory in Guangzhou, China. At the factory, more than 6000 workers 鈥 many of them illegal temporary workers 鈥 produce hi-tech products for US companies HP, IBM, Intel, Cisco and Jabil. The report, which can be read at www.NLCnet.org, found the workers at the Jabil factory work 84 hours a week.
