The refusal by presidential candidate Henri Falc贸n to recognise the results bodes poorly for Nicolas Maduro鈥檚 new term as president. The consolidation of a moderate bloc within the opposition that Falc贸n represented 鈥 which recognises the government鈥檚 legitimacy 鈥 would have significantly cut into the strength of the more intransigent or radical parties on the right and provided Venezuelan politics with much needed stability.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has come out strongly against United States President Donald Trump鈥檚聽latest sanctions on the South American country. With a dire economic situation and a growing wave of violent opposition protests, President Nicolas Maduro turned the tables by convening a National Constituent Assembly (ANC) in July.
Venezuela's presidential elections have been set for April 22 as talks between the government and opposition aimed at promoting peace and unity appeared to crumble.
Venezuela鈥檚 right-wing opposition announced on September 26 that its representatives would not attend the upcoming round of exploratory talks that were set to be held in the Dominican Republic the following day.聽

The Donald Trump administration announced new, unprecedented against Venezuela on August 25 that are designed to cut off financing to Venezuela. The Trump team pretends that the sanctions are only directed at the government. But as any economist knows, this is clearly false.

Britain Labour opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, has said he is saddened by the violence and loss of life in Venezuela, 鈥渆ither of those on the streets or of the security forces who have been attacked by those on the streets鈥.

In a speech to parliament on June 21, Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson attacked the Venezuelan government and President Nicolas Maduro, while praising right-wing opposition protests in the country.
It is not clear whether Whish-Wilson鈥檚 position reflects the official policy of the Australian Greens or is merely a personal view. In either case, the Greens should reject this position that promotes violence and confrontation, rather than dialogue and respect for Venezuela鈥檚 democracy and sovereignty.
