Divisions in the Northern Territory Labor Party were on show on May 12 as the party鈥檚 annual conference voted to ban fracking across the territory, weeks after Chief Minister Michael Gunner lifted a moratorium on the practice. The vote was a vindication for the more than 200 protesters who gathered outside.聽

More than 600 activists rallied here on April 22 to condemn Chief Minister Michael Gunner鈥檚 announcement that fracking would go ahead in the NT despite his election promise of a 5-year moratorium. 聽

The Gunner Labor government was elected in 2016, partly on the promise to hold back on fracking which would open 51% of the NT to the controversial process of mining gas via hydraulic fracturing or 鈥渇racking鈥.

Aboriginal candidate Yingiya Mark Guyula has won an upset in the seat of Nhulunbuy, toppling sitting member and deputy-chief-minister-to-be Lynne Walker after preferences and recounts on September 9.

Guyula聽delivered the NT Labor Party its only defeat in the August 28 election 鈥 it now holds a whopping 18 seats in the 25-seat parliament. The seat was previously seen a safe one for the popular Walker.

With scores of anti-fracking protesters outside, the Australian Labor Party Northern Territory conference voted on February 13 to approve a moratorium on any development of the fracking industry while critical scientific studies on its impacts are carried out.
