Since its inception in 2001, the Socialist Alliance has been actively involved in campaigns to protect high conservation native forests from being logged and we support an end to the forestry conflict in Tasmania.

Beginning in April, so-called peace talks have taken place between some conservation groups and timber industry stakeholders about the future of the Tasmanian timber industry. Both sides have painted the talks as a once in a lifetime opportunity to 鈥渆nd the forest wars鈥.
Environment Tasmania (ET) director Phill Pullinger told the May 13 Australian: 鈥淲e've had 30 years of worsening trench warfare in Tassie over forests and now is the time and the opportunity to essentially solve the forest conflict 鈥 and solve it properly.鈥
I鈥檓 a climate change activist and have lived in Hobart for five years. During that time, I鈥檝e been involved in the campaign against the Gunns鈥 pulp mill, through the group Students Against the Pulp mill. More recently I鈥檝e been a member of Climate Action Hobart.
I鈥檓 running as a candidate for the Socialist Alliance for the seat of Denison in the August 21 federal election.
After weeks of political wrangling and uncertainty since the March 20 state elections, a new government has been formed in Tasmania. For the first time in Australia鈥檚 history, the Greens will have ministry positions.
The Labor Party and the Greens agreed to a 鈥減ower sharing deal鈥, which offered a ministry for Greens leader Nick McKim and a cabinet secretary position for Greens MP Cassy O鈥機onnor.
