Misogyny

A new report, entitled , has reaffirmed what most women and girls already knew: sexual abuse and harassment are incessant, it starts young and it is on the rise.

Commissioned by Plan Australia and Our Watch, the survey collected responses from 600 girls and young women aged 15鈥19 across Australia.

In the wake of US film producer and former studio executive Harvey Weinstein鈥檚 outing as a sexual predator, who infamously preyed on young actresses, the hashtag #MeToo, which women are sharing to say that they too have experienced sexual assault or harassment, is now trending as an international discussion ensues about sexual violence and power.

So far more than 12 million women have shared the hashtag.

For millennia, women have had to contend with the ideology that because of their biology, women鈥檚 second class status is part of some 鈥渘atural order鈥. This has been perpetuated by the state, the church, the family, and reflected in laws and through education.

But this is bullshit. Throughout many millennia of human history, women occupied a status at least equal to men鈥檚. The problem is that you won鈥檛 hear about this reality in school, you won鈥檛 see it reflected in the media or in film.

Legislation passed in the Queensland parliament on February 14 could mean that Wicked Campers鈥 vehicles with misogynist slogans that vilify women and promote rape culture are taken off the road from March 31.

The legislation says operators who refuse to remove 鈥渋nappropriate鈥 words or pictures within 14 days will have their vehicles deregistered. The Advertising Standards Board (ASB) will be responsible for determining if a slogan is inappropriate on receipt of a citizen鈥檚 complaint.

In a continuation of the rancid rape culture spewing from Australian university and high school campuses, a national grouping of young men identified with the Facebook page 鈥淵eah the Boys鈥, which boasts half a million likes, is spitting chunks onto social media.

The page is receiving attention now because members of the group scheduled a 鈥渕ale-only鈥 meet-up at Sydney's Coogee Beach. While the anonymous 鈥榊eah the Boys鈥 page admins sought to distance themselves from the event, within hours thousands of the page鈥檚 followers had jumped behind it.

Newly elected Senator Pauline Hanson gave her maiden speech in the Senate on September 14 鈥 20 years after her first appearance as a parliamentarian in 1996.

Her incendiary聽speech outlined a far-right agenda of racist bigotry, misogyny and attacks on welfare rights.

Following a community campaign, the Queensland government has announced it will deregister Wicked Campers vans that "fail to comply with determinations by the Advertising Standards Bureau". The vans are banned in northern NSW council caravan parks and bans are being considered by the Tasmanian government.
I caught a taxi this morning. Muslim taxi driver. We listened to the radio silently, side by side all the way, ABC News. Almost all of it, relentlessly, consisted of quotes about the evils of Islam, from lengthy Trump and Clinton quotes to a rationalised discussion about indefinite imprisonment for those with radical views in our own country. We sat, rigid with embarrassment, with nothing to say. All I could think was that this was 10 minutes out of my day, but it was going to be repeated over and over again for him. And still I had nothing to say.
Students gathered outside the Wesley College gate at the University of Sydney on May 16, with their mouths taped shut, demanding the names of the editors of the 2014 Wesley Journal, which included a page called the 鈥淩ackweb鈥. The 鈥淩ackweb鈥 featured in the journal as a spider diagram of intercollegiate campus 鈥渉ookups鈥, complete with the full names of students who had reportedly had sex with other students, and referred to women named in it as 鈥淏iggest Pornstar鈥 or 鈥淏est Ass鈥.
Well my only New Year's resolution was to have no hope the status quo would somehow miraculously change itself in 2016 鈥 and it is a resolution that has proven all too easy to keep. For instance, any hopes that changing the 鈥渇ive鈥 to a 鈥渟ix鈥 on the annual calendar would lessen the misogyny strangling decency in this country were pretty quickly defeated.

The most recent examples of sexism by two Coalition front bench MPs reminds us that sexism and misogyny is alive and thriving 32 years after the landmark law that made such discrimination a crime. From the outrageous sexist attacks on former PM Julia Gillard 鈥 largely from the same Coalition MPs 鈥 to MP Peter Dutton's 鈥渕ad fucking witch鈥 (MFW) text, the view that women are second-class citizens and sexual objects 鈥 and can be treated as such 鈥 remains strong especially among those with the means to shape public opinion.

One in three women is a victim of domestic violence. I am one of those. The violence did not happen until I was pregnant and, as a result, vulnerable. I did not report it to the police as I was too scared: it was carried out in the privacy of our flat; there was no obvious injury and he was very contrite afterwards. I vividly remember him buying me breakfast at a cafe the next morning, an unusual event, while I sat too traumatised and depressed to say anything. Before that, I had never suffered a physical assault from anyone.
