At a time when science should be guiding government policy, important climate research is under attack, reports Ben Radford.

There was a dangerous underestimation of the scale of the climate crisis we face at COP26,听argues听David Spratt. Targets for 2025 and听2030 need to be the focus.

Damon Gameau is an environmentalist who wants to go beyond the dire facts of the impending climate catastrophe, writes Barry Healy.

Two decades ago, barely anyone called themselves an ecosocialist. Yet today the term is widespread on the left.

This comes from an awareness that any viable alternative to capitalism must do away with the current destructive relationship between human society and the wider natural world. It also stems from a recognition that too many socialists in the 20th century failed to take environmental issues seriously.

In his new book听A Redder Shade of Green, Canadian ecosocialist activist and Climate and Capitalism editor Ian Angus says ecosocialism must be based on a careful and deliberate synthesis of Marxist social science and Earth system science 鈥 a 21st century rebirth of scientific socialism.

Greenhouse gases are rising so fast that it could soon be 鈥済ame over鈥 for the climate, a leading scientist warned in response to a new study published on November 9 that finds the planet could be heading for more than 7掳C warming within a lifetime.

The , published in the journal Science Advances, reported that the United Nations鈥 most accurate estimates on the 鈥渂usiness as usual鈥 rate of global warming may actually be vastly underestimated.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Staff Association says the Turnbull government's backflip on climate science research does not go far enough to repair the damage done by the deep and ongoing cuts to Australia's leading public research body. CSIRO management is continuing with plans to slash 296 jobs across the organisation, including more than 60 experienced climate and marine scientists. About 40% of the jobs are expected to be cut through forced redundancies.

World famous climate scientist James Hansen, known as the 鈥渇ather of global warming鈥 for being the first to see the threat of catastrophic climate change听, has issued a new warning. Sea level changes are likely to be much higher, less stable and happen much sooner than previous predictions.

As this century progresses, the record high temperatures experienced across Australia in the past few months will no longer be dangerous departures from the norm, but a regular feature of Australian summers. This is one of the conclusions reached in a draft of the fifth assessment report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was leaked and published online last month.
The science that informs us about climate change is becoming more and more alarming. The National Snow and Ice Date Center said on March 23: 鈥淥n March 7, 2011, Arctic sea ice likely reached its maximum extent for the year, at 14.64 million square kilometers (5.65 million square miles). 鈥淭he maximum extent was 1.2 million square kilometers (463,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average of 15.86 million square kilometers (6.12 million square miles), and equal (within 0.1%) to 2006 for the lowest maximum extent in the satellite record.鈥
