Poem: Photos of Jenin

June 19, 2002
Issue

These are the photos of Jenin:
There are houses
in ruins
ready-made mausoleums
for the bodies within.
There are faces
of families
families in ruins
a son half in a pit
a body in a pool, human red
a daughter unrecognised
the open-mouthed faces of newly widowed women
with the husks of their newly dead
These are the photos of Jenin
a place of refuge
for the dispossessed of Palestine.
Homeless again
their homes now but tracks
for the gritty traction of the tanks.
