With a crowd of 500,000 people, Montreal鈥檚 march for the climate was the largest in the world during the September 20-27 week of climate action. Despite provincial labour laws preventing unions from striking over political issues, 7500 workers formally voted to go on strike for a day, reports Alain Savard.
Quebec
Quebec鈥檚 October 1 general election campaign in Quebec unfolded as two distinct contests, writes Richard Fidler.
One contest was the competition between the Liberals and Coalition Avenir Qu茅bec (CAQ) for control of the government.
The other contest in the predominantly French speaking province of Canada, with a long history of struggling for national sovereignty, was between the Parti qu茅b茅cois (PQ) and Qu茅bec solidaire (QS) for hegemony within the pro-sovereignty movement.
A young, white, French-speaking, Quebec-born man opened fire inside a Quebec City mosque on January 29, killing six Muslim worshipers 鈥 Azzeddine Soufiane, Abdelkrim (Karim) Hassane, Khaled Belkacemi, Aboubaker Thabti, Mamadou Tanou Barry and Ibrahima Barry 鈥 and injuring 25.
The six victims were first-generation immigrants who had lived in Quebec for years, some for decades. The shooter, Alexandre Bissonnette, had expressed anti-immigrant positions online and was a fan of US President Donald Trump and France鈥檚 far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen.
