Climate Election Kickstart in Brisbane

Hundreds of people turned out to the kickstart event on March 25. This was the major event organisers encouraged participants in the March 15 School Strike to attend.

The most inspiring part of the night was the announcement of the next big action on May 3. Details are still being worked out.

Demands of this campaign are: Stop Adani; No new coal, oil or gas; and for 100% renewable energy by 2030.

The timing has been set for just before the coming federal election and is part of a campaign to make this a "climate election".

"We'd be lying if we said this would be easy," the chairperson told the crowd. "The fossil fuel industry will use money to win and buy political support."

The Coalition are unabashed supporters of polluting industries but the crowd was told the ALP is simply better at "pretending to care".

The #ClimateElection campaign is aiming to pressure all candidates from all parties to recognise that climate change is the number one concern and that coal, oil and gas are the number one cause of the problem. Campaigners are asking all candidates to commit to the campaign's demands.

The campaign is pushing for the establishment of Stop Adani and/or Climate Action Groups in every suburb and town across Australia. Several new groups were formed on the night.

"They will play dirty but we will stand together," the chairperson told the crowd.
