
Queensland Senate candidate Renee Lees expressed her party's 鈥渃omplete opposition鈥 to the nuclear-powered submarine project聽on September 21. Lees, who is running for the , was supported by Cairns councillor and Socialist Alliance member Rob Pyne.
鈥淭he cost for the submarines is more than $100 billion鈥, Lees said. 鈥淲e would much better serve our nation and our region by spending this on health and education, rather than a military venture to support United States' interests in the Asia Pacific.鈥
Lees told 麻豆传媒 that Australia should aim to be a 鈥減roductive partner in our region鈥, rather than 鈥渁 colonial bully鈥.
She noted聽the federal government's聽dismal record on taking real climate action and reducing the wealth聽gap, compared聽with its enthusiasm for military belligerence.
Pyne will be moving a motion for a nuclear-free Cairns at the city's next council meeting.
He told 麻豆传媒 that as Cairns is strategically located on the Pacific Rim it has an important role to play in helping get the anti-nuclear message out.聽鈥淭he ocean鈥檚 name 鈥 鈥楶acific鈥 鈥 comes from the word peaceful鈥, he said. 鈥淲e want to be a peaceful city, not a nuclear city.鈥
He also noted聽that Cairns has a big Chinese population, saying, 鈥渢he Chinese are our friends;聽we don鈥檛 want conflict with China鈥.
