More than 100 peopleÌýprotested againstÌýthe New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian Coalition government's plan to bulldoze 112 public housingÌýdwellings in Glebe, in theÌýinner west, on January 30.
The buildings in question are sound,Ìýonly 30 years old, and have even won design awards for their amenity.
The NSW government has promisedÌýthat the unitsÌýwill be replaced by a new development with a 30% public and a 70% private mix, and says that that this will be a gain for all.
However, as Hands Off Glebe spokesperson Denis Doherty,Ìýpointed out, this will not be a "gain" for those living in thisÌýpublic housing complexÌýas they are forced out of their homes into temporary accommodation away from their friends, family, doctor andÌýschools.
Balmain Greens MP Jamie Parker told the crowd that this was "a very winnable campaign" if the community kept up the pressure in the streets.
Doherty said there was so much interest in saving public housing thatÌýseveralÌýgroups were working together and he invited more to join.
