Housing activists have organised a on December 9, International Human Rights Day weekend. Public housing tenants, renters, homeless people, unionists and community organisers are taking action across the country to demand real action for housing justice.

"The housing crisis is the worst in living memory," organisers said. "It is a humanitarian disaster. At least 750,000 people live in housing stress and are in desperate need of secure housing."

Increasing numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, elderly women and the working poor are among the fast-growing homeless demographic. The rate of homelessness has almost doubled since the 2021 Census.

"We are taking action on housing because federal and state governments are set to make the situation worse."

‘Housing is a Human Right’ rallies and actions across the country are taking place in Naarm/Melbourne, Gadi/Sydney, Wagga Wagga, Lismore and Kaurna Yerta/Adelaide. Activists are calling on governments to solve the housing crisis by building more public housing, stopping proposed demolitions of public housing, freezing rents and extending more rights to renters.
