Activists gathered outside Homes Victoria on October 19 to demand an end to the privatisation of housing and for more public housing to be built.

The rally, organised by the 聽(GHAG), heard from a range of speakers, before signs with messages like 鈥淗omes not prisons鈥 and 鈥淲hat ever happened to the 鈥榝air go鈥?鈥 were posted on Homes Victoria鈥檚 front entrance.

People drew 聽on the footpath and outside nearby real estate agencies, such as 鈥淪top increasing rents, we can鈥檛 afford to live鈥, 鈥淗ousing is a human right鈥, 鈥淪top profiting off shelter鈥 and 鈥淧eople are homeless because of greed鈥.

, GHAG member and 聽in the Victorian elections, said public housing stock has dramatically decreased over the past 20 years.

鈥淭he big housing build is only promising 12,000 properties, but there are over 110,000 people on housing waiting lists in Victoria,鈥 she said.

鈥淭he sums don鈥檛 add up. We need a large scale public housing build of 100,000 properties and to regulate and force developers to hand over 20% of developments to public housing.

鈥淩enters need better protections, immediate rent freezes and rental caps.鈥
