Hundreds of climate strikers heard from First Nations leaders and climate activists before marching to the Woodside office in Perth on March 3.
Speakers included Traditional Owners Raelene Cooper and Josie Alec, who are campaigning against Woodside's Scarborough Gas Hub and Joana Partyka, who was raided by WA Police because of her climate activism.
Rob, from the XR Grandparents group, spoke about three similarities between the movement against the Vietnam War and climate activism today. First, he said we confronted a big injustice from the Australian government. Secondly, he said the government covered the injustice with lies — today its called "greenwash". Thirdly, he said, the movement took to the streets.
"Don't give up," he implored the young strikers. "The war ended," he said. People power can make the difference and climate activism today is about doing "something much bigger" than the anti-Vietnam war movement of the past.
School strikers on the platform denounced the government's greenwashing and said that "we've been let down by the institutions that are meant to protect us".
