Volunteers from the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society launched the 2023 incarnation of 鈥淎ustralia to Cuba with love鈥 on June 3 in the Botanical Gardens.

Campaigners aim to help end the US blockade of Cuba and to raise money for medical equipment in Cuba by walking, cycling, dancing or running 14,886 kilometres 鈥 the distance between Australia and Cuba over eight weeks.

Supporters can pledge money or sign up to participate .

Last year, more than 60 people helped raise more than $25,000 for medical equipment.

鈥淭he reasons for a second round of the campaign are just as compelling,鈥 the website explained. 鈥淚n 2023 the people of Cuba continue in their relentless struggle to assert their sovereignty in the face of the inhumane blockade imposed by their powerful neighbour.鈥

鈥淪hamefully, under [US President Joe] Biden, the United States has tightened the squeeze in a vain attempt to turn Cuban people against their revolution.

鈥淭he US blockade is a massive and unacceptable violation of Cuban people鈥檚 human rights; it is an economic war against a small country whose revolution has created extraordinary benefits for its people.鈥
