The Hiroshima Day rally on August 6, organised by the No AUKUS Coalition Victoria, started at the State Library Victoria and marched through the CBD.

Speakers included Margie Beavis, from Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW), David Ball, deputy branch secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, Xavier Dupe from the National Union of Students and Victorian Socialists, Greens Senator Janet Rice and Jack Howard from Labor Against War.

Dupe said “the ruling class wants to police the Pacific ... [but] it’s a choice … There’s no threat to Australia if we break the US allianceâ€.

Ball said that former PMs Malcom Fraser and Paul Keating had both spoken out to abolish nuclear weapons and have stood up against AUKUS after leaving parliament, adding: “We need a parliament that will stop AUKUSâ€. He also said we needed an inquiry into AUKUS, or MAD — “mutually assured destruction†— with US and Britain.â€
