The 2023 NSW election is overshadowed by a severe housing crisis fuelled by years of Liberal-National and Labor governments' encouragement of speculation and privatisation of public housing stock and, over the last few years in particular, the loss of thousands of homes in the floods and bushfires resulting from the climate crisis.
Spiralling rents and unaffordable house prices are a big part of the rising cost of living while real wages continue to fall.
One candidate proposing radical solutions to the housing crisis is Rachel Evans, the Socialist Alliance candidate for Heffron and a housing activist.
Â鶹´«Ã½ accompanied Evans on a visit to the Waterloo and Glebe public housing estates to speak to tenants and fellow housing activists, Karyn Brown and Carolyn Ienna. Both live in public housing units facing imminent demolition.
