Syrian refugees

An ISIS attack on May 2 near the Rajim Salibi border crossing between Iraq and Syria left 37 refugees dead and at least 20 injured. Victims were as young as three months. 鈥淭he attack was repelled [by] the intervention by Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF] fighters,鈥 Firat News Agency reported.

Most of the refugees were fleeing the Iraqi city of Mosul, which for months has been the scene of heavy fighting as Western, Russian, Iranian, Iraqi government forces and allied militias try to retake the city from ISIS.

As more than 3000 people rallied in Melbourne鈥檚 CBD on November 5 to protest against the federal government鈥檚 refugee policies, about 200 people gathered in the far northern suburb of Eltham in support of a group of Syrian refugees who will be resettled in the area in the coming weeks.

A proposal for a refugee hub at Callan Park has won the support of Leichhardt Council. Leichhardt Council decided on December 8 to write to the state and federal governments to request funding for the establishment of a Refugee Welcome Centre in Callan Park. Leichardt Mayor Darcy Byrne said: 鈥淏y offering a place in our own backyard to the orphans and widows fleeing Syria and elsewhere, we can put our good intentions into action.鈥
