stradbroke island

鈥淭his issue is deeper than sand-mining on Stradbroke Island鈥, Aboriginal community leader Dale Ruska told a group of protesters outside the Magistrates' Court on September 7. 鈥淚t's also about justice for Aboriginal people. This mining company has stolen more than $80 million in illegal sand, and will probably be given a modest fine. 鈥淢eanwhile, Aboriginal people are being jailed for minor offences. We need justice for Indigenous people now.鈥
Sand mining on Stradbroke Island, offshore from Brisbane, will be phased out by 2027, under a new plan announced by the Queensland state government on June 20. Most of the island will become national park and development of ecotourism will be the main industry.
