The Wangan and Jagalingou Family Council lost its Federal Court challenge against Adani on July 12, NAIDOC day. But it is not giving up the fight.
The 鈥渇inal鈥 approvals for Adani鈥檚 Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland have proven to be a flickering green light, at best. Persistent challenges by the Environment Defenders Office Queensland (EDO) and Lock the Gate Alliance appear to have borne fruit.
Hundreds of Stop Adani activists rallied in Sydney and Brisbane on July 5.
Following the Queensland government鈥檚 approval of Adani鈥檚 conservation plan for the endangered black-throated finch and聽its groundwater management聽plan, the company again announced it would start work on its Carmichael coalmine project 鈥渨ithin weeks鈥. But it faces several more obstaces, not least of which is the huge social movement gearing up for the next stage of its campaign.
Federal minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan wants the Adani mine to be the pathfinder to open up the whole Galilee Basin, but some mining companies are pulling out.
While the Queensland government moves to fast-track approvals for the delayed Adani coal mine in the Galilee Basin, thermal coal export forecasts continue to show a terminal decline globally in the long term, consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The Federal Court reserved its decision on May 28 and adjourned so parties can consider a complex administrative issue that could mean that an appeal by Wangan and Jagalingou Family Council (W&J) against Adani could be thrown out.
More than 100 Stop Adani activists from around Australia participated in a webinar on May 22 to share initial reflections on the way forward for the campaign post election.
Prominent Aboriginal elder Wayne Wharton is making a tilt for the senate in Queensland this election, campaigning on issues such as justice for Aboriginal people, justice reinvestment and an improved aged care system.
Wharton told 麻豆传媒 Weekly: 鈥淭he systems that we鈥檝e had for the last 230 years is broken, they鈥檙e useless.鈥
These include the legal system which, he says, is based on a 鈥渇eudal system of punishment鈥 instead of rehabilitation, and the two-party system, in which the big parties have become dominated by 鈥渢op-end-of-town corruption鈥.
