On October 12, Amnesty International released a alleging 鈥渃ivilians living in areas of northern Syria under the de facto control of the Autonomous Administration led by the Partiya Yek卯tiya Demokrat (Democratic Union Party, PYD) are being subjected to serious abuses that include forced displacement and home demolitions.鈥 The report said some of these alleged abuses were war crimes.
More than 100 asylum seekers in detention on Manus Island have signed an appeal to Europeans for help. They say that just like the asylum seekers in Europe, they have fled war and persecution and like them they need safety and resettlement. They request European countries 鈥渢o urge the Australia government to cease the illegal detention of us鈥︹ Almost 1000 refugees and asylum seekers are indefinitely detained on Manus Island and a similar number, including families with children, are on Nauru.

Salil Shetty, Amnesty International鈥檚 secretary-general, has slammed the Northern Territory intervention, saying that it is making the problems facing Aboriginal Australians worse, AAP reported on October 7. He said the government鈥檚 鈥渢op-down externally driven鈥 efforts to close the gap on Aboriginal socio-economic disadvantage were instead having the opposite effect鈥. Amnesty was appalled that current policies had in effect caused 鈥渇orced evictions from their traditional homelands鈥.
