Why

Join the Yeerongpilly Greens for a screening of the AACTA and Walkley Award nominated Australian documentary  followed by a Q&A discussion about the critical role of activism in a healthy democratic community.

Franklin is a beautiful, stirring portrait of the campaign to save the Franklin River that became one of the most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history.

Eighth-generation Tasmanian and environmentalist Oliver Cassidy embarks on a life-changing solo rafting trip down the beautiful yet remote Franklin River. His goal is to retrace his late father’s 14-day expedition to attend the blockade that helped to save the World-Heritage listed national park from being destroyed by a huge hydroelectric dam project in the early 1980s. Physically challenged beyond his limits, Oliver’s journey is one of healing and deeper understanding as he searches for the right way to say ‘goodbye’ to his father.

This acclaimed feature-length documentary uses never-before-seen archival footage alongside stunning cinematography and interviews with iconic activists such as Bob Brown, Oliver Cassidy and Uncle Jim Everett. The film is voiced by Hugo Weaving.

Recent harsh sentencing of environmental activists, peacefully protesting against climate inaction, is a timely reminder to all of us that the privileges we enjoy in our communities are not incidental. Non-violent social activism benefits everyone and should be protected.
