At the Tyson Foods slaughterhouse in Brooks, more than 2300 workers have been on strike since October 12 to demand better wages and conditions. The United Food and Commercial Workers members are demanding an end to harassment, improved safety training, and better handling of biological hazards. Most of the workers are refugees or migrants from Sudan and Somalia. Tyson Foods is responsible for 27% of all beef, pork and chicken sales in the US. According to the union, management and scabs verbally abused some of the striking workers with racist taunts and others were allegedly beaten with metal pipes.
