On March 6, environmental protesters demonstrated at Australian embassies and consulates in the US, Canada, Japan and Britain against the destruction of old-growth forests in Tasmania and the undermining of democracy by Forestry Tasmania and logging giant Gunns Ltd. A letter addressed to PM John Howard, calling on his government to protect Tasmania's forests, was signed by a range of international conservation groups. Protesters carrying signs saying "Stop Gunns" and "Save Tassie's Trees", had "Gunns" taped over their mouths in solidarity with the 20 people being sued by Gunns for speaking out against its attacks on the environment and public health.
