Issue

On March 2, the BBC screened a documentary showing footage of asylum seekers being assaulted, sexually humiliated and racially abused at Oakington detention centre, run by Global Solutions, a Group 4 company. In November, the prison passed an inspection by Anne Owens, chief inspector of prisons, and has been considered one of Britain's safest prisons. The documentary caused widespread reaction, with Global Security announcing the immediate suspension of 15 employees. Owens told the BBC on March 3 there was no evidence that privately run prisons were more abusive than public ones.
