Brisbane Resistance Centre launched

BY GRAHAM MATTHEWS

BRISBANE — The room swayed to the melodies of the Cuban Revolution while celebrants feasted on Cuban food at the launch of the new Resistance Centre here on May 27.

Forty people answered the call to celebrate the continuing survival of the Cuban Revolution and to launch the new centre at Barry Parade in Fortitude Valley. They heard from El Salvadoran activist Victor Umanzor, recently returned from Cuba, on the striking contrast between Cuba and the rest of its Latin American neighbours. Umanzor paid special tribute to CISLAC, the Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean, for its continuing work in support of the revolution and the peoples of the region.

The launch also heard from Resistance and DSP activist Rohan Josey, who remarked that he had now been a part of three Resistance Centres in Brisbane in the past two months.

The launch was serenaded by Brisbane duo Jumping Fences, who sang songs they had learned from Cuban musicians. Singer-songwriter Phil Monsour played songs of struggle and Mark Cronin sang the ballad of Che Guevara.

"All in all, the night was a great success", said Brisbane Resistance organiser Angela Luvera. All funds raised were donated to Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly's fighting fund.
