TAFE workers rally in Brisbane

By Bill Mason

@box text intro = BRISBANE — More than 800 Technical and Further Education staff rallied in the Roma Street Forum here on May 28 to protest against the Borbidge government's refusal to negotiate a central enterprise bargaining agreement.

State Public Services Federation of Queensland secretary Gordon Rennie told the crowd that they were fighting for the future of TAFE, and urged them to continue the struggle.

TAFE unions have claimed that state budget cuts mean a loss of more than 820 jobs from the TAFE sector.

The rally authorised a campaign of rolling stoppages in opposition to the government's individual institute proposal.

"It is time the government listened to the message from its staff and started negotiations with the TAFE unions for one statewide agreement", Rennie said.
