"'Trust' is indeed a key issue in the coming election. The Australian people can have absolute trust that the Howard government will lie about its record and its real intentions", Coral Wynter, the Socialist Alliance candidate for the seat of Brisbane, said on August 30.
"But the ALP under Mark Latham can also be 'trusted' not to rock the boat of the corporate system", she continued. "The lies about refugee children overboard, imaginary Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, the GST, Medicare and education funding are only the tip of the iceberg. The Socialist Alliance stands for an end to the Howard government of lies, but also calls for pressure to be kept on a Latham Labor government to implement policies in the interests of the people.
"Another Australia is possible. An Australia with jobs, free health care and education for all. An Australia where people and the environment come before corporate profits. We stand for the immediate withdrawal of all Australian troops from Iraq; cuts in spending on the military; an end to detention of refugees and closure of all detention centres; and land rights and compensation for Aboriginal and Islander peoples."
The Socialist Alliance is the newest nationwide political force in Australia, uniting nine socialist organisations and hundreds of individual activists and progressive people. The alliance is running candidates in every state and territory across Australia.
"Our campaign will be about the maximum involvement of people in ending the lies of the government, and demanding a society without war and racism", Susan Price, the Socialist Alliance candidate for Sydney, said on September 1.
"And we don't just want people to vote for an alternative — we plan to get thousands onto the streets on Sunday October 3 for the nationwide 'End the lies' rallies."
"Our campaign is to unite working people, refugees, Aboriginal people, women, unionists, gays and lesbians — the people this government has tried to isolate and attack", said Lisa Macdonald, the Socialist Alliance candidate for Reid.
