Trade unionists against US blockade
HAVANA — Trade unionists from 40 countries have agreed to spearhead a worldwide drive against the 30-year US blockade of Cuba. The resolution, adopted at a meeting of visiting trade unionists who attended the May Day celebrations in Cuba, also says they will continue to send material solidarity aid to the island.
Some 2000 trade unionists participated in the May Day parade at Havana's Revolution Square, calling for an end to the US blockade that has caused damage amounting to more than $40 billion over the past three decades.
In the country's 14 provincial capitals and in towns islandwide, workers marched on May Day demanding an end to the blockade and the scrapping of the Torricelli Act tightening it.
Cuban foreign minister Roberto Robaina says Washington's blockade is hurting some 2 million children on the island. He described it as a gross violation of the human rights of an entire people. [Radio Havana/Pegasus.]
