Toot, toot against Spotlight

NEWCASTLE — All kinds of drivers tooted their car horns as they drove past the protest outside the Newcastle Spotlight store on June 22.

The community action expressed solidarity with Spotlight unionists and condemned Spotlight's attempts to impose individual contracts on staff that would eliminate all penalty rates and reduce new employees' wages by $90 per week. A few of the protesters met with the store manager, who would not say whether or not trade unions would be allowed to represent new employees.

The leaflet handed to passers-by pointed out that the brothers who own the Spotlight store are ranked equal 86th in Business Review Weekly's Rich 200 list.
