The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has confirmed that Socialist Alliance (SA) will remain a registered political party, able to run in the federal elections with its party name and logo.
SA had to submit at least 1500 members after the federal government, with Labor Opposition support, enacted聽anti-democratic legislation聽last August.
Changes to the Electoral Legislation Amendment (Party Registration Integrity) Bill meant that parties without members of parliament聽had to submit 1500 names to the AEC to become, or remain, registered. Until then,聽parties could register with 500 names, which is what SA had done.
SA submitted a bigger list in December and the AEC confirmed on January 25 that it 鈥渃ontinues to meet the eligibility requirements set out in the Electoral Act to remain in the Register鈥.
SA thanks聽its members and supporters for once again helping out in this huge task. It means SA聽will聽.
