Residents resist McDonald's

By Vannessa Hearman

MELBOURNE — Residents in the Moreland area are fighting attempts by fast food giant McDonald's to build an outlet on the site of a 110-year old house. The house, at 1 Sussex St, Coburg, is the oldest house in the area.

On March 12, contractors attempted to demolish the house. Moreland Residents Against McDonald's protested at the site. The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union Construction Division then banned the site for safety reasons.

The house is still standing and a well-run picket has been established. A spokesperson for the group, Russell Bennett, told community radio 3CR that public support for the campaign has been overwhelming.
