That's History — People of the Cross — This series concludes with two programs about Jack Sherrett, a real Kings Cross identity whose stylish dressing earned him the title of "Hollywood Jack". Jack spent much of his youth on the streets of the Cross, as well as in boys' homes. He returned as an adult to work as a thief with his own code of behaviour. In this episode Jack describes his early life in Kings Cross. ABC Radio National, Friday, May 20, 7.10pm.

Back Catalogue — The Great Axeman: B.B. King — From the 1940s to the '90s B.B. King has carved out his distinctive guitar style of R&B and blues, making him one of the greatest "axemen". He is credited with influencing the Rolling Stones and Cream amongst many others. This program profiles his career, featuring live and duet material. 2NUR-FM, Friday, May 20, 7.30pm.

Green and Practical — Kangaroo Island — Off the South Australian coast, the island was once rich pickings for the seal and whaling trade. Now the whales and seals are drawing tourists to the island. Lynne Malcolm presents a feature on this remarkable place. ABC Radio National, Saturday, May 21, 8.05am.

The Listening Room — Backwash — From Three Journeys Upriver, written and performed by Barbara Campbell. A radio performance piece in which Joseph Conrad's novel of the same name becomes the frame for three jungle adventures seen through female eyes. Backwash presents a rich and eclectic mix of memory, myth and fantasy that is often funny, sometimes very moving and full of insight into how men and women make different stories out of long journeys "upriver". ABC Classic FM, Monday, May 23, 9pm.

Soundstage — Mother Courage and Her Children — By Bertolt Brecht. A chronicle of the Thirty Years War. Mother Courage follows the armies through 17th century Europe with her travelling canteen, selling provisions and liquor to the troops. "For what is war but market trading which deals in blood instead of boots?" Brecht wrote this play on the eve of the second world war. In Mother Courage herself, Brecht created one of the greatest tragic roles for an actor of the 20th century. Playing the lead role is the brilliant English actor Sheila Hancock. Music by Paul Dessau. Produced by Jeremy Mortimer. ABC Classic FM, Tuesday, May 24, 8pm.
