Activists gathered at Sydney Town Hall on May 22 to condemn the intimidation of opposition candidates in the presidential elections in Colombia, to be held on May 29.

Activists from Bolivia, Guatemala, Chile, Ecuador and Argentina joined the action to show their solidarity with the Colombian opposition which is also campaigning against electoral fraud.

Current front-runner candidate Gustavo Petro and Afro-Colombian environmental activist, feminist and lawyer Francia Márquez have been receiving death threats. Both have been outspoken on economic empowerment and access to land for Colombia’s poor and improved access to health care. They are also speaking out about corruption, racism and the social, economic and political exclusion of minorities.
