Thousands of people rallied across Australia on June 9 in a National Day of Action against live animal exports.

There were demonstrations in Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide calling on the federal government to ban the inhumane practice.

A recent survey has revealed that 73% of Australians now want to ban the practice. Two bills calling for live sheep exports to be phased out will be put before federal parliament in mid-August.

RSPCA South Australia Animal Welfare Advocate told the crowd in Adelaide: "Politicians will have the choice to either contribute to the end of what is one of the most shameful chapters of animal treatment in our nation's history — or be remembered for allowing it to continue on their watch."

The Greens' Sarah Hanson-Young repeated the call to immediately ban the live export trade: "The message to Malcolm Turnbull today, to the Prime Minister, is to stop ignoring the will of the Australian people. They want this trade ended and they want to end it now."
