BRISBANE - State legal centres held a stop-work meeting on the steps of the government executive building on April 23 following notification to legal centres of cuts of $500,000 to funding statewide.
Despite a Labor Party policy commitment to financial support, the Goss government still does not make any ongoing contribution to legal centre funding.
The federal government has reduced funding in an attempt to force the state government to take some responsibility for access to justice for low-income people.
At least 10 centres will be forced to reduce their services by up to 40% if the state government does not make the required grant.n
