High school walkout against N-dump called
ADELAIDE — The socialist youth organisation Resistance has called a high school walkout for 11am on August 16 against the proposed nuclear waste dump at Lake Eyre in central South Australia. The walkout will join the "I'm with Ivy" rally to be held at the Adelaide Town Hall at noon.
The federal government has proposed a low-level waste dump in the region. The Pangea corporation is also proposing a high-level waste dump in the area.
The traditional owners of the land, the Arabunna and Adnyamathanha people, have been fighting for native title over the land since the 1950s, when the first nuclear test took place there. No native title rights have been granted to the original owners of the land.
In a bid to increase its ratings, Channel Seven's Today Tonight program has organised a public rally against the proposed nuclear waste dump. The "I'm with Ivy" rally was named after a woman who ran a successful media campaign earlier this year for tougher sentencing of home invaders!
Resistance has organised the walkout to sharpen the politics of the anti-nuclear waste dump campaign and to involve more young activists. The "Students against the Dump" walkout demands are: No waste dump in SA, no waste dump anywhere; Land rights not uranium; Close existing uranium mines; and No new mines, no new reactors.
Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future and the Resistance high school members will hold a pre-rally meeting on the Barr Smith Lawns at Adelaide University at 11am, then march to meet the broader rally at Town Hall. For more information, phone Resistance on 8231 6982 or email <adelaide@dsp.org.au>.
