Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly - It's your paper

The Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly fund appeal is a special fund established at the beginning of every year to raise the funds needed by Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly to cover its production costs. This year we need to raise $100,000 to keep the Â鶹´«Ã½ going. By the end of July the Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly fund appeal had raised in excess of $58,000 and is well on the way to making its target.

The success of the Â鶹´«Ã½ fund appeal is by no means automatic though. Every week, across the country, hundreds of Â鶹´«Ã½ supporters organise and participate in fund-raising ventures for the paper. From fund-raising dinners, to film nights, to alternative cultural events — a wide range of political and cultural happenings are regularly organised in every city where Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly is sold to raise money for the paper.

Yet every Â鶹´«Ã½ event is also an opportunity for supporters of the alternative press, to come together in a relaxed social atmosphere to meet, discuss and show their solidarity with Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly.

The list of events that Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly has held this year is too long to recount. There are however a few outstanding events which have made a significant contribution to fund raising, but also to the culture of Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly.

In Canberra in May for instance, supporters of Green Left organised a "La lutte continue" dinner and dance to raise funds for the paper while marking the 25th anniversary of the worker- strudent revolt in France in May/June 1968. Over 100 people attended the dinner, lending their active support to Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly and making the night a great success.

In Sydney in July over 250 people attended the annual Â鶹´«Ã½ dinner dance and were left inspired by the superb meal, great entertainment and engaging speakers. The night was also a great success and an important part of building an alternative culture around Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly.

Every Thursday night in Brisbane, supporters of Green Left Weekly organise "Green It Up'" — a night of alternative music, poetry and speakers at the Celtic Club, to raise funds for Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly. Maurice Sibelle, an organiser of the event, describes the nights as "the highlight of alternative entertainment in Brisbane; a really good night not to be missed".

Coming along to one of the Â鶹´«Ã½ fund raisers in your city is one of the most concrete ways to show your support for the alternative press. "Meetings, Parties, Anything" (on pages 30-31) carries a full list of activities in your city. Why not stand up for what you believe and come along to a Â鶹´«Ã½ event this week, and help keep Â鶹´«Ã½ Weekly publishing. Green Left Weekly — it's your paper.
