In the wake of the national scandal about the abuse and torture of mainly Aboriginal juveniles in detention in the Northern Territory, the Grandmothers Against Removals (GMAR) organised a march and rally to protest the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families and communities.
Since the Bringing Them Home report was released in 1997, which investigated the Stolen Generations of the 20th century, the number of Aboriginal children being forcibly removed has increased more than 500%.
The proportion of children being placed back with their Aboriginal family is steadily declining. Aboriginal children are now 28 times more likely to be in prison than non-Aboriginal children.
