Imperialism, energy, environmental crisis and mother-daughter relationships are the subject matter of Ella Hickson鈥檚 play, Oil that begins its Perth Black Swan Theatre Company production season on November 5.
Premiered in London in 2016,聽critics have variously聽described聽Oil聽as 鈥渂old, playful and scorchingly ambitious鈥, 鈥渋ntelligently-observed鈥 and as a play that 鈥渢irelessly condemns the world鈥檚 obsession with and waste of oil鈥.
Oil utilises a time-travelling narrative, which is metaphorical rather than sci-fi, traversing the globe tracing the shifts of imperial power.
鈥淥颈濒 is everything great theatre should be; ambitious, exciting, and brimming with heart,鈥 says the play鈥檚 Perth director, Adam Mitchell. 鈥淚t takes us on a journey of big ideas in the search for light. It鈥檚 the kind of play that comes about once in a decade.鈥
