Thousands of protesters marched past the Democratic National Convention on July 25 in opposition to the Democratic Party's support for the war on Iraq. Protesters held signs demanding: "Bring the troops home now!" and "End the occupation of Iraq, Palestine, and Haiti!"
Protest organisers ANSWER and the Coalition to Protest the DNC thwarted attempts to block the demonstration when they won a suit in the Federal Court ensuring protest permits would be issued. Despite a large police and military presence, including helicopters, jet-fighters, police gunboats and bomb-sniffing dogs, protesters refused to be herded into the official "Free Speech Zone", which was surrounded by cyclone fencing and razor wire.
