In a defiant show of Black unity, members of the rival Black Power and Mongrel Mob gangs walked side by side in a hikoi (march) on October 16, called to protest a government bill that will remove Maori rights over the seabed and foreshore. According to organiser Pita Sharples, the participation of around 30 gang members in the 2000-strong protest was an indication of how deeply people feel about the issue. The bill is rapidly losing support, with another Maori Labour MP vowing not to support it, just days after the protest.
