Bradbury's Loggerheads on ABC TV
Controversial environmental film-maker David Bradbury explores the forest debate in his latest film, Loggerheads, screening on Tuesday, September 29, 8.30pm, on ABC TV.
Bradbury highlights the distinction between beauty and devastation, and places himself in the midst of a battle to save the forests of the sub-tropics of northern NSW.
Loggerheads is a film about the clash between the fear of losing a fast-disappearing natural wonder, and workers' fear of losing jobs.
Bradbury lives on the edge in the hinterland west of Byron, west of Mullumbimby. One morning, the peace and serenity of his life was shattered by the thunder of log trucks on the narrow, winding road of the valley floor.
The timber fellers had come to take the few remaining millable logs from the forest of his valley sanctuary.
Bradbury admits that the film would amount to nothing if he couldn't offer a solution to the forest dilemma. While he errs on the side of conservation, he falls back on the wisdom of old timers and young minds alike.
Bradbury has made many environment films over the past 10 years which have been acclaimed in Australia and overseas, including The Last Whale, Shoalwater Bay: Up For Grabs, The Battle For Byron and Jabiluka. Loggerheads is an Australian Film Commission/Frontline Films production.
