Russia's Deep Secrets — One and a half kilometres beneath the icy waters of the Arctic, a submarine lies wrecked, a gash in its hull just above its nuclear reactor, its two plutonium-tipped warheads exposed to sea water. The need to decommission hundreds of nuclear submarines and dispose of tonnes of radioactive spent fuel rods, reactors and "hot" waste remains one of the greatest post-Cold War dilemmas. The anarchy of Yeltsin's Russia intensifies the problem. ABC TV, Wednesday, April 24, 8.30pm.
