In a Time of Violence — The second part of this brilliant three-part South African drama is set in inner-city Johannesburg and Soweto just prior to the 1994 elections. SBS, Sunday, July 2, 8.30pm.

Insight — SBS premieres its new national current affairs program, hosted by journalist Vivian Schenker. It promises to provide the widest possible coverage of contemporary Australian issues. The program will contain single issue investigative reports up to 30 minutes long. There will also be shorter reports, studio debates, profiles of people in the news and features on culture. SBS, Thursday, July 6, 7.30pm.

The Hidden Hand — Zimbabwean writer and anti-apartheid activist Jeremy Brickhill unravels the facts about the apartheid regime's "dirty wars" in southern Africa. ABC TV, Tuesday, July 6, 11pm.

Cinema classics: Aelita (1926) — Directed by Yakov Protazanov, this early Soviet science fiction epic is about a soldier, an inventor and a police informant who make the first journey to Mars. SBS, Thursday, July 6, 11.25pm.

CIA: Berlin Cowboys — The premiere of a documentary series which looks at the history of the CIA. The ABC has scheduled it at politically safe, inconvenient time, so remember to set your VCR before you go to bed. ABC TV, Thursday, July 6, 1am.
