ANU staff/student strike
By Will WilliamsCANBERRA — More than 200 Australian National University staff and students braved the frosty 7.30am start for a strike and rally here on May 29. The action, the latest in a campaign to oppose staff and course cuts at ANU, was called jointly by the National Tertiary Education Industry Union and the ANU Students' Association, and endorsed by the ACT Trades and Labor Council.

The arts faculty stands to lose 12 permanent staff and five on contract will not be renewed.
A picket line was positioned under a huge banner declaring “Save ANU”. Hundreds of leaflets explaining the cuts and the importance of the strike were distributed. Many cars and delivery trucks turned away after reading the information. Police threatened to book drivers who made u-turns from the picket line.Ìý
