NAIDOC march

@9point = ADELAIDE — More than 1000 Aboriginal people and supporters rallied for the annual National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) here on July 14. Despite torrential rain, a spirited crowd marched through the streets with yellow, red and black balloons adorned with the slogan "justice not tolerance in 1995".

Burma speak-out

@9point = BRISBANE — A Free Burma speak-out was held at King George Square to mark the release of Aung San Suu Kyi on July 10 after six years under house arrest in Burma. Organiser San San Myint, a University of Queensland academic, emphasised the need to support the pro-democracy movement in order to free all the people of Burma. "We have a long way to go."

@9point = Other speakers included a representative from the Burma Support Group and Amnesty International, which is campaigning for the release of Dr Ma Thida Myanmar, who is serving a 20-year sentence for distributing information about the activities of the National League for Democracy.

French protest

@9point = CANBERRA — About 100 students marched from Parliament House to the French embassy on July 19, chanting anti-nuclear and pro-peace slogans in French in an action organised by Canberra secondary students. The action highlighted the anti-nuclear movement's rejection of the anti-French focus that has been prominent in establishment media portrayal of the campaign against nuclear tests.
